Darn Power Head

Ok, I was in the middle of doing a water change and I unpluged my Rio 1700 because it made things easier. Once I had replaced my needed water, I plugged it in and nothing happened. It is only 6 weeks old. I called LFS and they said make sure their wasn't a bubble or rock in it. So I unplug it check and make sure it is clean (which it was) and try again. I am pretty pissed and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions...

Unfortunately the RIO is nortorious for break downs. Consider yourself lucky that it didn't fire up in your tank and spew toxins into your system.
Check your warranty and if its still valid, return it.

Well, if you exercise your warranty, the manufacturer should give you a new rio--you only had it 6 wks.
Rios are well known for catastrophic breakdowns, but many hobbyist [the lucky ones] swear by them!
Maxi Jets are good pumps, quiet and work well. You can get a maxi for the safety of your tank, then go ahead and get a warranty replacement rio and use the replacement as a backup for a QT or to just use to mix your sea salt with.

Thanks Beth, I will take your advice and purchase a new one tomorrow. Is there a certain power level I should I get for my tank?

MaxiJet 1200, 295 gph --this is their largest. Your rio was probably at a higher gph. You could get 2 [better circulation in tank to use 2 that face each other anyway] or you might consider a Hagen. These pumps, I find, are also very reliable, quiet, long lasting but are bulkier and bigger. Maxi's are smaller and attach very well to sides of aquarium with suction cups. Maxi's are also versitile and can be used with skimmers.
Happy Shopping!

This might sound stupid but, I had the same problem with mine and all it was, was the plug was in backwards, you might want to try this. Good Luck
