what kind of xenia is this? when i went to the fish store i wanted to get xenia, starfish and zoas the i remembered i neede a new hydrometer and salt soo i ended up getting the zoas. when i got home i saw a little starfish that had three legs only. 2 days later i found a little bud that looked like all the small feater dusters. i was like oh crap i dont need no more of these. the a couple days later it grew twice its size and pulsing. lucky me i got all i wanted, hitchhicker style
Day 1 less than 1/4 inch

Day 2

Day 3 new little buddy

Day 4 now about a little over 1/2 inch

I will update it as much as possible. do you guys think that i should move it? if so how do i cut it.
thanks

well the bad thing with exenia is that any tissue left behind will start to regrow so to completly move it you will have to dig into the rock. it grows really fast though .

yeah when an exenia propagates itself it can literally walk across the rock leaveing little patches of itself along the way each piece of tissue will regrow I would wait till you get some mor though because exenia can fail out of no where.

if you can place a small rock or snail shell next to it the xenia will attach to it then move the rock or shell to a new location and dig it away from the zoos.

Whats the secret to getting Xenia to grow? I have what appears to be 3 different varities in my 35gal. hex (frags) and they are simply maintaining and not growing/spreading any. The one frag of what I think is pink xenia like in the pics above has been in my posession for almost a year now and has done nothing but sustain itself. The other frags are brown in color and have longer "tentacles" or arms. I have a 175w MH light on them (15k), and plenty of flow. Also, another question - my pulsing xenia are not pulsing! Why not? It seems, after talking with a few people you either have no luck getting this stuff to grow or it grows so fast it overruns your tank. Any help/advice would be appreciated. (Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread.)

Xenia is a hit or miss species in my experience. When I started the hobby I was making $50-$100 a month selling the frags. A year later it all died on me.
It is now a year and a half since the dieoff and a frag I bought is spreading like mad again.

Careful what you wish for. The placement could be bad for those zoas they could smother them out eventually.
If I ever got xenia I'd attach it to my glass so I can remove it easily with a razor blade.

thats exactly what i want to do, but im not sure how to get it to attach to the glass... im thinking i might just set a rock with xenia by the glass and see what happens?
do you have any suggestions?
oh, also. to get xenia to grow...idk, they prefer "less than perfect" conditions...
i would just move them somewhere else, probably to a darker spot. ( i am new, and i have xenia and it seems to be fine no matter where i put it and i have PCs)

I've found... to get xenia to grow - it's hit and miss - like others said. I had a small colony that was growing and spreading... then it started to seem to rot and die. I took out the rock, broke up the colony into about 5 separate colonies. Now the smaller 5 are each growing to be as big as the original in just a few weeks time. Xenia is fickle - you never know what it's going to do.

you can do it that way or use a type of epoxy or glue and attach them to the glass that way.
but like what has ben said they like "dirty" water more nutrient rich water than most of our tanks, they are also a means of nutrient export because of how much they take in and how fast they can grow.
