so, frank died today. for those who dont know, he was a new white sebae anemone that i was poorly advised to buy, before i knew it shouldnt be white.
i came home adn it looked like co
ebs were floating out of his open outward protruding mouth. he was also 1/4 the size he was a week ago. i noticed some web like stuff yesterday, but im new to anemones and i didnt know if that was bad. bozo the clown sure was mad to see him go (attacked me the whole time).
so, my questions...
i only have compact flourescent lighting on my tank (is this also called PC lighting?). i just bought this lighting for teh anemone (which i now know is not the right lighting). are there any anemone that can live under this lighting? what should i look for in an anemone? i dont like being a killer. :help:

I was told that I needed a minimum of 4 watts of lighting per gallon for a BTA which is one of the more hardier anemones. When my husband and I started our first saltwater tank last year, we lost 2 Sabae anemones in one month that were also bleached when we bought them, and we did not have MH lights, which is what you need for that kind of anemone. I now have 4 watts per gallon of HO lights and am thinking of getting a BTA.
Sorry for your loss...been there, done that...unfortunately

Sorry to hear about your anemone. I don't have any experience with them dying. I was told that they get like jelly and translucent. Also if not removed quickly can poison your whole tank.
I have had a sebae (Annie) for 2 years under florescent light. It was only 3 inches long at first. I know not the best but have not had any problems. It too was white when I bought it, not know at the time it was bleached and not a good idea. She is now the size of a huge dinner plate, a dark tan color, and lives with a Maroon clown (Speedy). I just recently purchased another one (Anna), not white. That one is doing pretty good under my fluorescents. I am upgrading soon to MH w/PC and lunar lights. I think they will like that better.

He didn't stink? Believe me dying anemones stink. They also tend to look like melting ice cream when they go.
What you were describing was one of three events. 1. He was expelling whatever was left of his zooxanthellae which also might mean that he was on his way out. or 2. He was simply expelling waste. or 3. A severe reaction to your water chemistry causing him to do #1 or #2 or even eject his insides which is just as bad as #1 if not worse.

Sorry to hear about your sebae, I just bought one 4 days ago and it is white with purple tips. Should I be concerned with the color. The LFS said it was very healthy and a great anemone to have. My clown fish loves it and now I am alittle worried.

imaburch ~ problem with many sebae's is when they are collected they loose their zooxanthellae and turn white. They should be a tan/brown color instead. It takes a few months for them to grow it back and in most cases Metal Halide lighting is required. See thread below for pics of before and after on the sebea anemone.

dont be overly concerned with the coloring as to toss it out yet but. make sure you have your sebae under MH lighting to start with sebaes cannot survive under less lighting than MH.I would feed it regularly very small portions daily.I use liquid life with cyclopseze for mine.becuase it is fed tiny particles daily it absorbes the nutrients quickly.when you do a regular feeding use small chopped foods such as mysis shrimp phlanton chopped meaty foods they will get more nutrients from smaller foods and will expell waste less often.avoid the feeding of silverslides they cannot digest the skin or bones which makes them regurgitate this part back into your tank.

yes its true for all anenomes.although in nature they do eat whole fish as in nature they still regurgitate what they cannot digest.I found with my sebae that feeding it smaller foods it expells much less often as it did when feeding silverslides or larger chunks of seafood so now I stick to mysis shrimp, chopped squid and plankton and cyclopseze(which i spot feed to it daily)after a long battle of force feeding to bring it back to health.that can be read about on my post about progress of dying sebae.within the last yr I have managed to kill 4 anenomes with proper lighting good water quality and normal feedings with krill and silverslides.from BTA LTA and a couple other so called easy to keep anenomes.and almost my sebae one of the hardest species to keep healthy in captivity.until i changed its diet and feeding habits.now its doing great.imno expert in this field what so ever but was given informatin from others who have had many yrs expertese with marine life.im glad i took their advice.

you may be able to keep it for short time but under those lighting conditions it wont be a long term resident in your tank .I have noticed that company aslo carries very inexpencive halide pc fixtures you may wish to concider upgrading to to the highest wattage output for your tank size.it really does need MH what size tank and what are its dim?

Agreed for long term survival and ablility to thrive those PC lights will not be acceptable, but thats just my opinion. I would also consider the upgrade.

i am wondering, I read earlyer in this thread that when the anemone dies it can poisin your tank? What does he do to your tank? is it poisin that will kill off all of the fish in the tank and all? and would there be anything that can help you keep your tank from the poisin. I want to get a anenome and just want to have a heads up if the worst is to happen. Also what would be a good anemone for lower lighting, i would have about 3 watts to gallon.

Well different anemones carry different toxins, the jury is still out on if an anemone actually poinsons your tank per say.
However, we are sure that there will be an ammonia spike that will need to be addressed when an anemone dies as it can create a rather large spike depending on certain factors.
The damage depends on how the anemone died. Did it have to fire its nematocyst? Was the body left in the aquarium to long before removal? Did it wind up getting chopped up in a pump thereby dispersing all of its toxins, nematocysts and other bodily fluids that may harm other corals and the water in general.
Every situation is different, but there are basic damage control methods you can do.
1. Do a water change of at least 30%
2. Run fresh carbon
3. The use of a polyfilter would be recommended
4. Removal of as much as possible of what ever is left of the anemone
Just a few thoughts on it.

Different bulbs and different sockets. MH lighting will not be the same as PC or VHO. It will also take a different ballast to drive them. I have a dual MH ballast longer than a cinder block and about as thick.
Some folks like PC lighting but I don't. I prefer VHO and in my case its a VHO/MH combo custom made.
There are online vendors that sell VHO/MH combo lighting but its not cheap, but it will be cheaper than purchasing at your LFS. They are sometimes called retro kits, or plug and play lighting kits. Look for URI bulbs in the VHO, they are simply the better bulb to go with. For MH bulbs I like the look of the XM 10,000k bulbs. I use the 250 watters.
