Dead coral question...

I have been batling Green Hair Algea. I was just wondering if I could take my Dead coral decoration out and clean it under hot water in my sink. This would mean Tap water. If I scrubbed all the algea off and let it dry, would it be OK to go back in the tank. It's a pretty small piece and it's in a 125. Thanks...

It would be the same as you was putting it in new. Shouldn't hurt anything. Do you have a clean up crew for the algea? How are you phosphrates testing out?

Hey b_ball12_99,
Yes, I do have a clean up crew. I ordered the one rated at 75g. Maybe that's why they are not really keeping up. I use RO water so my phosphates should be fine. However, I have ordered a test kit just to be sure and it's on the way. I recently upgraded my lights so I'm sure that has something to do with it. I'm also running a sterilizer. It's very frustrating because I've spent all this money and now my tank looks like crap. Any other suggestions or ideas would be GREAT

Lightening changes cause algea blooms I've read. Thats probably the problem. I had a left handed hermit tear through the hair algea in my 5 gallon.

Hay tacks, it will grow back if you wash it off, Myself If you dont allready have them Emerald crabs will make a huge dent in the algea, we have 4 in our reef , they are my personal favs , the last 3 we got from this site started eating as soon as they hit the rock and havent stopped, cya :D

Currently, there are 2 Emeralds in there and they are BUSY BUSY. I've also cut back on feeding a bit. Hopefully this will soon come to an end. Thanks to everyone for helping out. Maybe I'll go get some more Emeralds

Lawnmower blennies will do a better job than any crab at eating hair algae.I saw a friends tank that was literally covered in green hair,so bad that most of the rock couldn't be seen.In a couple weeks two lawnmowers had it all cleaned out. This tank was a 150gallon.

Went to lfs yesterday and they didn't have any. I already have 2 Scooter Blennies. Will they get along with a Lawnmower???

Not really sure, but I doubt if they will get along. But if it were me,I would loose the other blennies for one that actually helps the tank.
