Dead corals

I was recently given a few pieces of dead coral... They looked pretty nice. I put them in a tank to cure with some other pieces of live rocks but one of them just would not stay down! It keeps floating! Surely this is not good for my tank, but is it safe to even have mixed in with my other rocks? I've been doing freshwater for a while, but recently started doing saltwater... On my 4th saltwater tank!

Hi,

I never had a chunk of coral float before, it's safe I know to have it mixed with the live rock, because I have been just that for quite a while now, I always mix. You could attach the coral to a heavier rock via pond foam. Trim the foam after it is dried and stopped expanding.

However you would have to use a piece of dead dry rock...it will have to stay out of the tank for 24 hours to dry before you can use it. Once both pieces are dry squirt the pond foam and attach it....trim it up and you are good to go. It won't take much foam, just a little squirt.

Thank you Flower, the dead coral seems to have weight to it, but when put in water it just floats! It very white in color and very porous... I will post a photo once I get home! Maybe you or someone can identify it! Again, thanks.

Could be a coral skeleton. Hollow inside? Maybe if you soak them long enough, they'll suck in water and sink on their own.

I'm willing to bet that if you soak them in R/O water long enough that they'll sink. Just rubber band them to something to weigh them down and keep them totally submerged. May take a week or two but I think it'll work. I wouldn't use salt water though. Salt is more buoyant and it might defeat the purpose. Worth a try.

Just my opinion.
