dead goby? he was fine!

i bought a diamond goby last night to help maintain the sand and he was good, working away when i went to bed. i woke up this morning and hes a goner. what happened? he was good. all the levels are good
ph 8.0
amm 0
trites 0
trates 20
sg 1.25
my inverts, nems, corals, and other fish are fine (except one has pop eye)
what could have happened?

diamond gobys tend to burrow in sand beds and you might now see them for a while. Just watch for amonia. When that spikes then you know that he is dead unless you see him in your tank dead.

i see him dead, no ammonia spike though.
thats why im wondering if maybe something happened once the lights went out. or something else.

Is your salinity 1.25 or 1.025? If its 1.25 then that is extremely high. What kind of substrate do you have? Gobies need sand to burrow in. Otherwise i got no idea.

Lets be realistic here. . . Do you really think anything would be alive in water like that. . . . ?

Could you give more information about your tank? How long has it been set up? Stocklist? How much LR? How deep is the sand bed? Things like that.

Apparently, your tank is quite new. It seems that you added to much too quickly and your bioload couldnt handle it. You should wait about two months before buying anymore livstock.

What probably happened is that you bought a sick fish.
I am very selective about where I buy fish.
I've lost plenty of fish, because the clowns at LFS's only care about turning them out and selling.
I WILL NOT buy a fish unless I'm confident that it has been in a fish store for at least 14 days.
This guy was probably stressed as it came in from a box probably that day or somewhere around there. Being it is Sunday, I would have expected he was only in their tank for a day.
I've had that happend numerous times and learned my lessons the hard way about getting excited.
I wouldn't worry about the bioload as more fish just means more work to maintain. I would definatly look at lowering your nitrates. Try a refuge with cheato to eat it all up. You could even get a bag and put some in and float it in the top of your tank.

i did a drip line for 2 1/2 hours, and yes the lfs had just gotten the goby in the day before. also i put some chaeto in and did a water change so the nitrates are super low.

collection practice most likely, either that or you dripped for WAY too long.
a fish out of the LFS shouldn't need such a long drip IMO. as long as the pH and salt levels are the same, you could have acclimated a lot shorter. Most i ever acclimate from the LFS is an hour. acclimation that long is tough to keep pH and temp swings in check.

exactly what i was thinking.
remember to make sure the fish is eating also at the lfs.

good to know i dont have to drip that long for future reference. i thought i would try to compensate and let him kinda get less stressed but i guess it back fired.
lesson learned. ill pass it on.

That is not the reason the fish died

I agree that the fish most likely was already stressed out to begin with and then the long acclimation didn't help it.
