Dead rock and Live rock.....

Setting my tank up and I am debating using dead rock for a base.... I have around 30 Lbs of LR that bought off someone tearing down their tank(a friend is keeping this in salt water with a powerhead at the moment until I am ready for it). Good idea or not?

Its fine to use dead as a base. It will become lr over time. In regard to your lr and power head. Its fine along as the water is kept w in the range of 70-80 degrees. You want to keep the critters on it alive. Also sum light either natural or other will help alage stay alive

i used 'dead' LR that hasn't seen water since 2007. i seeded 30lbs of baserock with 30lbs of new, fully cured live rock... also used two 30lb bags of 'aggralive' natures ocean live sand (they claim has live nitrifying bacteria to jumpstart and speed your cycle)
i cannot complain at all, not sure what part did it, if it was EPIC rock, or as-advertised sand, but my tank fully cycled in only 2 weeks.
already have fish, crabs, and a shrimp in there, who are loving the tank.

Using dry base rock and seeding with some nice Live rock is a great way to save a bit of money while setting up a tank.
Its a great way to control what is introduced into your tank as well. If you have an existing aquarium and are looking to upgrade to a larger tank, taking your current LR and adding it to some dry base rock gives you basically the same critters and hitchhikers that you had in your last system.
Pretty much the same for Live Sand. I would recommend purchasing dry base sand and seeding it with a cup or two with some established LS from a friends tank or some from a LFS.
This hobby is expensive enough without having to purchase all Live Rock and Live Sand for setting up a new tank. At $5-9/lb for LR verses $2-3/lb for dry base rock. For a large tank set up it could save you hundreds. This is money that you could spend on upgrading equipment like a good skimmer, RO/DI unit, ATO, decent reef lighting, or a media reactor.

I purchased 25 lbs of dead rock and will seed it with 25 lbs of LR I purchased off someone taking their tank down. I have since added
my rock and now I seem to be having bubble issues with my overflow box. Did not have these bubbles until adding rock. Coincidence? What could be my problem? Sounds like my overflow return line to my sump is constantly burping.
