can you really cycle with a dead shrimp? if so, exactly how do you do it(i.e. do you get the frozen kind, the prepared, the gutted, please be speciffic)? when would be the best time to add live rock, live sand during the cycle? would it be smart to add live damsals halfway through the cycle and take out the shrimp since they are a bit more entertaining?

raw shrimp is good to just drop in there during the cycle.. I dun't know quite enough about ure tank settings but i added one damsel in my tank during the cycle and he lived most say he wouldn't but sure enough after the cycle was done i took him back to the fish store because he was always hiding and such.. So i think you might be able to but i'm not sure wether mine living was a fluke or not...
Good luck~~

What size is your tank? Did you start to cycle yet? I cycled my tank with live sand for about 2 weeks and then added 4 damsels. I've been up and running for about 5 months now and the tank is super stable now. Best advice anyone can give you is to GO SLOW!! Let the tank do it's own thing, in it's own time for the best results.

I have a 75 gal just comming through the cycle and all I used was 3 jumbo raw shrimp with shells on. It worked just fine. :) It took a while to start seeing ammonia, but when it started It was fine

i cycle a 20 gall tank, threw 2 pieces of shrimp in and let it go. its the regular table shrimp (peel and eat). as the bacteria builds it will eat the shrimp up.
