Dead Zones

Can someone, anyone, instruct me how to check for dead spots in the tank. I have a 20 gal with only 1 powerhead working at this time. I've only had this tank up running for about 3 months and I have an abundant amount of red slime growing but only on the bottom of the tank, on my sand bed. How do I check if that area is a dead zone, and what I can do to improve circulation.
Thanks!!

What I do is just use my finger, but if you wanna just watch the area for a minute go buy a cheap fake plastic plant or maybe some nylon rope and stick in in the area you think you have no flow. You should get your answer then.

Id say add another powerhead and place it on the opposite side of the tank.
And TooSalty gave u an excellent way on how to check for dead spots.
And ur cyno could be coming from other things as well. Such as water quality and excess nutrients
