Debt or Broken Even?

Just wanted to find out if most people are in debt or if people are pretty good at working with a budget when it comes to fish tanks.

OK I selected have lots of money left over - but to be truthful that is only because I have not made any of hte major purchases. Though I will tell you we as a couple follow a strict budget and it is @ my urging so I will live within that budget (which explains my signature line)

I'll go in debt on a house or car ~ but not a hobby.
I'll use the credit card for online purchases - but if I can't pay the statement when it arrives - I don't buy it until I can.
Sometimes this takes more time than I want ~ but I hate paying interest !

I have the exact same philosophy as erikandstacie.
When I was a freshman in college, reps from several credit cards were on campus signing us all up. At 18, with a 15/hr. week, $6/hr. job, I had credit cards with a grand total of $6500 limit. How long do you think it took me to max them out? Yeah.
Lesson learned the hard way: if I don't have the cash on hand to pay for it, then I really don't need it!!

Almost exact same thing happened to me. Joined the miltary, got all kinds of credit, just recently got out of debt, and I will never go back, except for maybe a house. All the tanks I have I paid for with cash, plus I'm a big fan of e-bay. If I've got an extra 20gallon tank chillin at my house for more than a week I ---- it. Not just tanks but everything. My buddy jokes that he does not sit still to long at my house or else I'll put him on ---- or in the classifieds.

I usually break even every time I go to the LFS or make a purchase online. Me and my freind use his credit card and then I write him a check and end up with hardly any money at the end of the month.

No debt for me either. I spent the first 10 years of my adult life carrying credit card balances and department store credit. Never got in over my head, but the interest was sickening. I pay cash for everything except online orders, but I pay off that credit card every month so I don't pay any interest.
The only things that I have financed are my house and my two toys, I mean cars.

Heh I wouldn't consider 6500$$ in debt really. I am about 30,000$$ in debt. About 20,000$$ of that is school loans and the other 10,000 is credit cards from the 2 years I spent in school and the year it took me to find a decent job after school was over.
Figure I should have the credit cards paid off in a year to a year and a half but the school loan will be minimum payments for the rest of my life because as long as you don't default on it it isn't heavily considered in home/ vehicle loans.

My hobbies is why i work a second job. With that money i do as i need. When it comes to big purchases or online i use debit card so i can only spend the money I have.NO credit cards here (nasty little bastiches, learned my lesson as well there) My wife has a monster school loan and with every thing else, I need the second income to keep my hobbies up. Tell ya what , Keeping snakes is almost as expensive as saltwater :) But I enjoy my hobbies and they keep me out of trouble ! :D

steve-o, i voted that i am in debt, not because I have actually acrued debt because of the hobby, but because I have spent many times over the amount I had "budgeted" to spend. I mean, I probably spend at least 1/2 of my income on fish! Good thing I don't have too many expenses right now. I'm about done with all the big purchases now, so that figure should drop WAY down. Too bad, sorta, I love buying new fish stuff.
good poll question, btw

I'll totally agree with broomer! Other than the house and truck I pay cash or I don't allow myself to have it. I've watched to many people get themselves in trouble, especially small business owners.
I also keep enough cash on hand to pay three months worth of bills and am now in the process of making it six months. When it comes to money my motto is better Safe than Sorry!!!

hard not to get in debt with a wife, house, 2 cars, 3 kids, 4 fish tanks, and a 1100 gal pond. i look at it this way i cant take it with me so im gonna enjoy it now. the only thing i hate about it is the bill collectors calling lol.

I actually got a job again just to support my hobby! Am I ever in debt to my hobby? Absolutely, but I pay it off quickly before the interest has a chance to strangle me!

I'm not in debt because of my hobby. It's because when I got a high limit card I bought toys, lots a toys. It's a mistake I won't make again. Now I only pay cash. I don't even carry my cards anymore, I usually have enough cash in the bank. I must admit though, getting into this hobby has been a test of my self control over the cards .
