decided on a tank... questions...

In about two weeks were going to pick up an oceanic 140 gallon reef ready tank (were doing predator tank) It does come with an overflow system and glass top. We plan to get a wet/dry system and a lamp for it. I have a few questions though...
*My husband is totally hung up on getting an eel, hes not sure what he wants though. Suggestions?
*He has also shown interest in maybe getting a sting ray are there any that stay small enough to live in a 140?
*If we chose to do the eel, can we house hippo tangs, angels, butterflys, triggers, exc with it? How do we find out what is compatible and what isnt?
*Were not sure we want to do live rock (if we do it would be half live half not to save some money) What would we decorate the tank with? Does anyone use the faux "live rock"? Did you have success with it? What do you decorate with if you dont use live rock...
This is the exact tank... same color and everything

TIA!

umm, cant do the ray if you want to do aggressive fish (though im not sure it would fit anyway) Because more aggressive fish will nip at it. Secondly, IF HE wants an eel, I would go with the snowflake, just for the fact it wont out grow that tank. Thirdly, yes you could do tangs, angels, triggers and such. Just make sure to check compatibility first. I would STRONGLY suggest you get some marine books. A really good one is Marine Fishes by Scott W. Michael. This will help you alot with basic questions of compatibilty, fish size, and how easy it is to take care of. Good Luck,, and please do lots of reading in books, not just on the forum,, people have their own opinions sometimes, and sometimes its not always going to work. OH and the LR thing,, I will tell you it is much better to have as much LR as you can afford, it helps alot. If not atleast mix it with Base rock (dry or not) I would not do the 'faux' anything because it can not become live ever, and will look FAKE against all the great live things that grow in a tank.

thanks... i will certainly look up compatibility lists. He would like an eel but might want something a bit bigger than the snowflake. Were dropping 2000 on the tank, sump and lighting so im not sure how fast were going to be willing to drop an additional 400+ on live rock but we will see what happens lol...

do keep in nind that 'faux' LR is like 10 bucks a piece, you could get base rock for less than that,,so depending on how you plan to arrange, see if you LFS will order you some larger base rock pieces (3 or 4 good sized ones sould work really well) then when you set those and put your sand around it will cover most of it up, then you can get the LR to build ontop of that.

for 899 glass tank stand basic lights
i used 3/4 lr and 1/4 base
i like the lr better but after a while it kinda blends in....
i have blue backround..
but i say you definitley need rock for fish to hide...
just make sure you fully cycle the tank...dont use fish to do it..it hurts them
i read 2 books from library before i started...but there is alot to learn and the people here helped me alottttttt..i thank all for that..good luck with everyything and post pics as you go

You could do a zebra eel. They are larger but tend to be more docile and they don't have those huge needle sharp teeth some of the others do. They don't require any different care than any other marine fish. They need good water quality and most people will feed them with a pair of tongs. They eat anything meaty. You prolly don't want to wean them onto live foods as they may be more inclined to go after your tank inhabitants. Ask the lfs to show you feeding frozen foods.

Stay away from fimbraited if you want certain fish. Look into a banana or zebra. Your tank is fine for the life of the eel. I would stay away from a clown trigger. Male blue throat, humu humu, or even a niger would be fine in the tank.

Why stay away from a fimby? You guys gave me advice on when I got my fimbraited and he is doing fine with my eels, he is not agressive at all and at feeding he isn't crazy or going after the eels. Whats wrong with a fimbraited, maybe a lionfish and a medium sized angel?

You have only eels. Certains eels shouldnt be kept with fish IMO. Fimby. DME. They are small and aggressive. Yes people do it but she is looking for fish that are aggressive but can live in harmony. Zebra eel allows the best chance without getting the same eel as everybody elwe

Alright, I was just sayin'. No arguement on my end. And on the other big fish forum, there is a lady who has a BDM with many fish living in "harmony" and it's 2 feet & thick. But a zebra moray is a good choice, they get a nice size and not too thick like a fimby or a DM.

I wasnt arguing with ya. It can be down like I said. People do do it. But they probably have experience with aggressive fish. This is their first aggressive tank. Once they figure it out they could get a more aggressive eel if they wanted.

im not even really looking for an "Aggressive" tank.. we do want an eel for the tank and some nice fish that can live together. Hippo tangs, regular tangs, butterflies, maybe an angel, exc. An eel because my husband is obsessed.

Then a Zebra Moray would be a great choice.
