this is going to be a two part thread with room for opinions in the middle.
1st - what is the maintenance of a deep sand bed and how do i maintain it? 2-4 inches
opinion - add to it, keep it the same or ditch it?
2nd - If ditching it how would you go about it? and if adding to it, how would you accomplish it?
(EDIT---- MODIFIED QUESTIONS AND OPTIONS)
information on my tank.
125 gallon tall.
i would guess that there is 200-250 lbs of live rock.
about 3-4 inches of sand.
wet dry bio-ball sump. (see pics below) thinking about converting to refugium (comments?)
only fish right now are clown, corral beauty, keyhole angle and watchman goby.
lots of shrooms and zoo's and hairy things? lol
a little majano that is slowly getting exterminated. and one large purple long tentical anemone.
no skimmer
(did i forget anything?) see pics below or look around at http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/uu335/SAABtech/

2-4 inches of sand is actually a mid depth sand bed. a deep sand bed is about 6+ inches and a shallow sand bed is an inch or less..
I would reccomend either deep or shallow. the midrange sand beds tend to be the hardest to maintain. as they are too deep to be fully aerobic, and too shallow to maintain proper anaerobic properties. and thus are plauged with instability, aerobic areas getting created then dying when disturbed etc.

My Sand is 3 inches...I thought that was deep...6+...wow.
Watched your video...you have allot of anemones, I have never seen so many in a single tank. Other than some hair algae it looks real nice. In a 125g I expected more power heads. I have a 90g and run four.
