Denitrification in the sandbed

So my sand bed is about 1-2 inches (depth varies).

I notice right before water changes there are always lots of microbubbles on the sand. These disappear for a week or so after siphoning and then return. Is this evidence of denitrifying bacteria? And if so, are there any benefits to leaving them alone? Or in the long run will the build up of detritus be far more detrimental?

Cheers, I do notice these bubbles on my rocks too. These are all over my refugium but I assume this must be oxygen.
