Diamond Goby died

Digger, my diamond goby died two days ago.
I have been feeding my tank just a little every day sinking pellets, I started to get some hair algae on my rock, the figi rock is okay, but the kind that looks like a pine cone I am having a booger of a time with. Usually I restrict the light for 48 hours turning it on to feed 1-2 hrs. at the most then off again. and usually the cuc takes care of the algae. So on day two I found Digger in one of his spots breathing hard, kind of floundering. I immediately tested the water, everything normal, everyone else normal. I scooped him up in a cup and to a hsp tank. and tried to offer him pellets and mysis shrimp (thawed). he of course refused to eat, I moved him for fear that he was dying and if he went deeper into one of his holes I would not be able to get him out. Digger Died a short time later.

My sand is starting to look like crap again with him gone. But I am afraid if I did something to cause his death by ignorance, I don't want it to happen again. He had been sifting sand and eating pellets. I had him for only two months, my blenny did chase him, he was thin when I bought him but he always ate. I have two stars, serpent/brittle and various snails/crabs as my cuc. tank is 28G Nano. should I avoid a Diamond Goby?

I gave him mysis shrimp, I have the frozen I thaw it and target feed w/large syringe, other fish love it too, but it gets all over the tank, very hard to clean it up and make sure all gets eaten. snails come out from the sand, starfish go nuts for the stuff. guy at the lfs said this should be a "treat" I gave it once a week, pellets every day.
I have a flame tail blenny, he was a hitchhiker has been there from day two. he is kinda king of the tank, has a favorite rock, obviously he traveled to my tank in it. would chase digger into hiding alot, he was very skiddish, but that is their nature.
