Diatom Filter safe for saltwater?

Hi, I have access to a really nice diatom filter that my dad uses on his fresh tank to polish the water..
Would this filter be safe to use on a salt tank from time to time?

I constantly use a diatom filter - it makes you water clear in less than an hour (depending on the size of the tank)

could you explain what a diatom filter is please? I've never heard of it.

Yes it's safe, but be very careful when using it....any of the powder into the system could spell DOOM!!!!!!
