diatomic filters and ick

Will diatomic filters help in gaurding against "ick" and how long should they be used. Thanks

I use frozen brine shrimp. Would you drop a clove of garlic in the brine mixture and let it sit overnight? Thank you. p.s. the blue dye in the greenx turned in silicone blue. Will that ever leave? Thanks again.
