had to start my tank over after a power outage.
i used tap water two weeks ago to restart. been topping off with bottled water from the grocery store. any ideas how long it will take to starve the diatoms?

it could take a couple of days or it could take a week or later.

Run rowaphos on the tank and have some way of exporting nitrates too... tap water.. eek.

i'll try that. the lfs guy got me to buy a chemi pure bag...hasn't done anything. says it gets rid of silicates and phosphates...oh well. i need an ro system!

the chemipure elite? eh... it doesn't absorb silicates or PO4 anywhere near as well as rowaphos, still good though.
Definitely need a RO/DI system or buy that kind of water for sure.. I typically get it at 5gallons/$1 sometimes cheaper.

well i'm learning that. thank you! i'm gonna definitely use no more tap!
You'll notice though after running the Rowaphos, chemi pure, and using RO/DI water, the tank will turn around quick and look good.
Do you already have a refugium? when counter lit to the display lights, they help keep the pH up and provide a way to export nitrates and phosphates too and breed microfauna.
It's the multipart approach haha.
