Difference Between Hard and Soft Corals?

What exactly is the difference between hard and soft corals? Is it the texture they have or what their base is made of, or what?

hmmm. But all corals I've seen have some sort of hard part to them. I mean they are attached to something hard.
Is there a list of hard and soft corals I can find somewhere online? I got some brains, zoos, leather, mushrooms, hammer coral, long tentacle plate coral, frogspawn, fox coral, and polyps. Which are which?

Awesome, it's all clear now. Thanks.
So just to make sure, never have any hard corals in contact w/ any other hard corals OR soft corals. But softies can be in contact w/ other softies right?
Also, according to the guidelines, LPS are supposed to be on top part of the tank, but I prefer to have my brains and plate corals on the sandbed, which is at the lowest point of course. Is that a problem? They are doing great, but if it's a MUST to have the brains and plate coral higher up in the tank then I'll move them.

 ooh be careful with that.. some softies are vicious killers of other softies.. don't forget, in the wild they compete with each other for space.. zo's can sting each other.. another example is the cauliflower colt coral will readily kill the sarcophyton and sinularia species.

I think I'll go ahead and snap a few pics of the arrangement and you guys can maybe comment on them. I will really appreciate that.
Pics coming up soon.

looks fine.. nice corals.. only thing i saw is the zo's.. not a big deal but just watch as they grow/spread and get close to each other.. if they start stinging each other, you'll be able to tell as the polyps always retracts or turn a lil whitish.. but def nothing to worry about at the moment.. just a word of caution.. the powerhead looks kinda close to the sand.. i've had my suction cups on my powerhead slide and kick up debris.. but luckily my powerhead was near the surface so it only slide half way down.. if your powerhead slides, you'll get sand blown all over your corals.. just a thought

Thanks man. The PH that's close to the sandbed is placed in a weird position and no matter what, it won't hit the sandbed. It's end is pressed on the tank glass and the other end supported by LR.
One of my zo's will all of a sudden retract sometimes, then open back up. I don't know if it senses strong current all of a sudden and does that or gets stung. Very sensitive .
