if you have the money, go with the HQI's..you get as much output for less wattage..for example a 150 watt HQI setup will put out just as much PAR as a 250 watt SE(single ended) setup..

The only downside I know of from experience with the double-ended bulbs is that you will need to have a glass sheild that can block the UV rays put out by the HQI bulb, can take the heat and maybe an occasional water splash.

The double ended feature of the bulbs allows them to be more directed by the reflectors, thus focusing the intensity of the light.
Best lighting system you can get as far as I'm concerned.

Every DE bulb is HQI but not every HQI is DE. Both are types of metal halide. DE bulbs need a UV shield placed in front of them. SE's have the glass included with the bulb.

I've been debating DE or SE on my new setup and can't decide... I like the idea of overdriving the DE bulbs which is actually being done, and your getting more bang for the buck, but I don't believe that the bulbs last longer than SE since they aren't being driven as hard... The only real way to tell would be to measure the light output..
