Differences between Percula and Occellaris Clowns

With all the post recently about clowns, I was doing some research about breeding and found an article that claims 'true' perculas have the black around the white stripes and the Occellaris have absolutely no black surrounding the white.
I was under the impression that the Occellaris had a some black, just not as much.
If this is true, then my 'false' percs (sold as Occellaris) are actually true perculas....
Could anyone else confirm or deny this, the same article also said to count dorsal spines as Ocellaris have 10-11 and Perculas have 9-10. Mine move too much for me to get a good count and even if the did mine would probably have 10...
Not that it makes that much difference, they are still my favorite fish. I would just like to know which they are.

i think that true percs are usually a paler orange. the lfs has a pair of true percs and they dont have that much black, put are very pale. the best way to determine what species they are is to count dorsal rays, but you said they move too much. maybe try counting at night or someting? how much did you pay for it? true percs are usually more expensive around here. bo

Both the False and the true Perculas have the black, but in the True Perculas the black is bolder and more pronounced..these two pictures show the difference.
With all the tank raised clowns available these days, it is getting harder to tell them apart. HTH

lol, mine are somewhere in between, maybe a hybrid somewhere along the line......
The lines are pronounced but not as much as the one in your pic.
But you can see them from across the room.

My clowns are false percs, but they have fairly wide black borders. If yours aren't really pronounced chances are that it is just an oscellaris.

For what it's worth, ocellaris & percula clownfish can crosssbreed, leadint to the possible "hybrid" that You mentioned. Kinda like the Tomato & Cinnamon clownfish mating. It all depends on what "complex" they're in.
