I am starting a reef tank and i do not hav to much room for powerheads plus i already bought 2 of them. i was told that you also need about 25x the aomunt of water flow.
I was also told about FOWLR tanks that only ned about 15x amount of current in my tank.
I have a 50 hex and about 20 pounds of base rock and about 20 pounds of live rock, have 2 powerheads and a skimmer.
My live rock i think is about cured and starting to get a little bit of brown algae groth on the sides of my tank
at the point i am at now can i just go for a FOWLR with snails shrimp and hermts????

I certainly don't have 25X water flow....if you are keeping SPS corals maybe you need that sort of flow, but IMO if you are keeping soft corals and LPS they might be rather annoyed by such flow.
Now that type of tank is a problem, IMO, to get proper circulation. I don't care for hex tanks personally as they present certain problems.
The bigger question I would have is if you had adequate lighting for the tank for corals. But I think you can work with the flow....

if you were in my position would you still go for a reef or FOWLR?
the reason i got a hex was because i got a 50g tank n stand plus filter n pump for 70 bucks...

IMO a butterfly is not possible in this type of tank. There is very little swimming room. The clowns and goby would be fine.
