It depends on how big of a picture you want to end up with.There is no "minimum". I do suggest you try the photography section of this board and ring RyeBreads bell.He's the resident expert.

There is no minimum on megapixels.
The more pixels you get, the better.........
*It leaves you with more room to crop and adjust the photo.
*More pixels also allow you to get a better print output.
Just make sure that the camera has a good MACRO mode to it and possibly some control over manual options.

In case anyone doesn't know also....speaking of macro....look at "optical zoom" and completely ignore the digital zoom....optical zoom actually moves the lens, and this gives the quality closeups. Digital zoom is nothing more than you can do on your computer....the bigger you go, the less quality until you can actually see the pixels....optical zoom is the only one that matters. I say this, because I didn't understand that fully when I bought my first camera, and digital zoom was something I thought would work for closeups......look for a good OPTICAL zoom.
