Dips for new fish

At my LFS they said that you can add a solution to a bowl of water and put the fish in there for a couple of mintues before putting the new fish in your tank to rid them of any parasites. Anyone ever heard of this method?

I've heard of freshwater dips. Yes they are supposed to kill any parasites. I highly recommend doing a freshwater dip then quarintine the fish in a separate tank. I'm learning the hard way. My 2 YT damselfish broke out with ick. I had to catch them, that was nightmare, and now keep them quarantined to treat them.
