dirty hoses

What do yall do about build up in your hoses, i.e return hose? I had to do some matinence on my tank last night and when I turned my return pump back on, all this gunk that was built up in the line spewed back into the tank. This freaked me out just a bit and was wondering what anyone else does to prevent it. Thanks in advance!

You should clean your return lines as part of your regular maintenance routine. You can buy brushes with extensions to clean your hoses. If you have clear hoses especially you'll get some algae/detritus build up, regular cleaning should do the trick.
