Discovery Store Eco System.

Just curious to see what anyone else thought of the ECO System at the Discovery Store. For those that haven't seen it here is a breef discription.
Glass Ball about 4-5 in. round witha flat spot so it wont roll. It appears to be hand blown. I looked at it and couldn't figure out how everything got inside. It is filled with sea water. It had some CC or shells on the bottom. Their was some kind of algea looked like a red branch. The best part is it looked like it had 2 small peperment shrimp in it. YOu don't feed it. It is supposed to take care of it's self hence the name Eco System I guess. You are supposed to keep it in a room at 70+ degrees and make sure it is near some kind of light. From the light creates algea which creates oxygen and the shrimp eat it as well. Their were shells in there for them to hide under. It was neat, I would have bought one but the small one was like $50. It would make a nice piece for a work desk. Something soothing to look at without having to clean it. The only thing is the life span. It didn't get to much into spacifics.
Anyone else see this and have any comments?

I just came back from Las Vegas two days ago, and when I was there I had the opportunity to check out their Shark Reef Exhibit. I saw a similar thing to what you're talking about. The description sounds just about right, except I don't think, well at least the one I saw, there is a peppermint shrimp in it. I believe it's mysid shrimp. I could be wrong. At first I was a little bit appalled because how can they do such a thing. But later I found out that with sunlight, supposedly the whole 'ecosystem' can survive. So yeah that's just what I saw.

I had the same reaction when I saw it. I am not sure what shrimp was in it. It looked like a peperment thats all. I thought it might look cool on my wifes desk at work. I tried to find a pic of it on the net to post so people could see what I am talking about but I was unable to locate one.

My school nurse had one...I think it is actually brackish water with a seamonkey like shrimp in it.

They're pretty cool. It will actually last several years to. Sad thing is the large volleyball models cost about a g. A bit to pricey for me.

Thanks for the PIC. You know come to think of it. I think I did see it at Brookstone and not the Discovery store. We have both in our mall...I may get it. It looks really cool.

that seems awfully expensive - my wife used to make them in her 5th or 6th grade class with her students. They would use old two litre bottles
