Disease or Not Disease, That is the question.

I am in about the 2nd week of cycling my 30G FO tank. Everything seems to be on course. I have a blue neon velvet damsel and a cinamon clown. The damsel has what looks like cloudy blotches on its lower fins (mostly on one side)I've seen ich, and this doesnt have the "salt" look to it. I have not witnessed any rubbing against the rocks or any other abnormal behavior. Anyone know what this could be?

Does your tank have a CC substrate? I used to panic everytime I saw a fish of mine with a cloudy looking fin then I realized a lot of the time in a couple days it was gone. I finally surmised that the fish sometimes picked up coral dust from the substrate or off a rock near where it slept and in time it would wash away. This is assuming that your other fish are fine and you said you see no scratching so I would keep it under observation for a couple days and if it clears up and you do have CC (which you said it is a new tank so lots of dust would still be there no matter how much you rinsed it off) it may be the answer. If it does not clear up or it shows on other fins then re post and we will go from there.

Good! hopefully this will be a non event in your start up. To this day everytime I see a smudge, a spot, or a cloudy fin I start to worry (it comes with the hobby). I have learned tho that some fish (like my Puff favorites can carry a few spots on a fin and it never gets worse nor better). My big pair male has always had some spots on his side fins and yet after a few years he and I have learned to live with them lol. As old as he is (almost 8 years now I figure they are like the liver spots on a older persons hands).
