dissappointing reef tank after a year

i have had my reef tank running for alittle over a year. my levels seem to all be good. but i am not seeing any coral growth at all. the corals have not died, they have nice polyp extension, but they are not growing at all, or splitting after a year i would have thought that some type of growth should have been seen. i have no hard to keep corals either. i have a colt, shrooms, zo's, xenia, hammer, and GSP. but nothing seems to be growing, what have i been doing wrong?

Check your magnesium and calcium levels. Magnesium is often overlooked and it plays a very critical role in coral growth.

yes, please tell us all your levels and everythign you are checking for,
my guess is that you dont have greatlighting.
i had 192 watts of PCs over my 40 breeder and i had zoo browth, and only one mushroom split in 6 months, even my GSP werent even spreading. A few weeks ago i got halides, since i have had my mushrooms (i only have a few) split like 4 times, i can see growth as far as my zoos and even on my frog spawn, and my GSP have spread out over a cenemeter in each direction

I know it is frustrating, but it looks like u have the satrt of a nice tank. What is your lighting. I had the same problem as u and upgraded to mh. I have 250 W MH for my 46 gal tank. Not all corals grow rapidly by my Zenias have grown like weeds. lso my clams. Good luck.
PS I am not saying lighting is the only answer. Just one thing to consider. :happyfish

i just ordered a salifert mag test kit. but i know my CA varies between 400 - 440 ppm.
as for my lighting, yes i do have PCs.
they are the corallife aqualight 2x96w with lunars.
as u can tell my colt seems good, which that has grown some. my frogspawn (which was sold to my as a hammer) looks more like a frogspawn to me seems to be doing real well also. i dont know what to do, i changed the bulbs not too long ago, thinking maybe the spectrum of the bulbs went kapooty. i really dont think its a water quality issue since u can see the polyps on everything is extended, and i have some nice coralline growth on the glass, and the rocks. the only few things i can think of is the they dont like the lights, they want more, or could be possible since i do not run a fuge or sump? i was looking at the aqualights that have the PCs and HQI MH in them, but they still want $400+ for them. and i am also looking into buy a aquapod nano cube, so thats another $200 some dollars.
another option i may have is going back to using Oceanic salt, right now i buy the ocean water in boxes from *****, which made by catalina. maybe more waterflow? less waterflow? dang, you would think after a year this thing would be booming with corals all over, but i guess i was wrong.

i bet with bette rlights you would do better.
it appears that your tank is pretty deep. I had the same amount of light as you on my 40 breeder which is only 18 inches high. Everything was doing well, but it didnt grow a heck of a lot until i got halides like i mentioned above.
you can try moving things up higher in your tank. They appear to be pretty low.

ok i didnt see you mention about my levels so i know what they since i tested today, like normal for w/c day tomorrow.
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10ppm
pH 8.1
CA 430ppm
dKH 9.0
temp 79
my tank is 19.5" tall by 16.5" wide at the widest point of the bow. see when i first bought this my lfs told the PC lights would be fine for softies, shrooms, leathers, some lps, zos and etc... he said anything over 22" deep would be considered a tall or deep tank and would require MH lighting.

well, numerous people asked about your levesl. lol
hmm, it isnt as deep as it looks. you should be fine with the stuff you have. maybe moving them a little bit higher up. They will cirtainly look better and grow quicker under halides, but if you move them up higher then they should do better.
what kind of filtration do you have?
what about turnover?
any surface aggitation?

my filtration:
cpr bakpak skimmer
penguin 300 (minus the bio wheels)
55# of LR and 3-4" sandbed
i have 3 ph's
2 MJ 900s
1 MJ 400
on a redsea wavemaker
all 3 are aimed towards the surface, yea it has pretty good agitation.
i have 1 900 and 1 400 on at once, then just 1 900 on. and i get a constant flow from my penguin 330 and the outlet of my skimmer. i really dont know what my turnover is, i dont know how to calculate it.
i am sorry for being a pain i am just at wits end, after a year of nothing spreading.
i dont know what i can put up any higher, my frogspawn i was told should be on the sand, and my colt coral does take up alot of space during the day when fully opened. and my LR is only stacked to about halfway up.

Stay patient. As i mentioned I have the MHs now. I had the Coralife 2x96 but wout the moons. Lighting for me was the difference between surviving and thriving. I lso had colts and finger leathers. They do not really require much light. I was not adding phyto plex, DTs or any thing like that, so they eventually died out. I have changed many techniques lately. It took me a few years to kinda' figure it out. You will too.

What's your specific gravity?
What is your feeding schedule?
Water change schedule?
I have the 2X96W PCs on my 45g tank and while growth is not outrageous, it is happening (frogspawn, anthelia, bubble and cynarina doing quite well)...So lighting is a big factor but MHs aren't totally necessary. If I had the budget I would absolutely do it though.
