Just wanted to pass along a discovery that I made. My protein skimmer/filter system was running slow and getting really loud and the skimmer wasn't skimming, so I asked my lfs what to do about it. They said to take the entire system off the tank and soak it in distilled vinegar for 24 hours, rinse and put it back on. I did and WOW! The whole thing runs better than it did new. My skimmer has been pulling so much crap out of my water that I don't know how my fish have been able to survive with it in the water. Has anyone else ever used vinegar to maintain aquarium equipment? I had never heard of it before. I am very impressed.
