Distilled White Vinegar

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to pass this along:
I have a cheapy plastic box hydrometer. It has worked fine for almost 2 years. Almost monthly I will clean it with some distilled white vinegar for the recommended 20 min. Well a bit back I left the vinegar in for over 24 hours as I had forgot about it.
The next week I am doing my normal water checks and am shocked to see my specific gravity go from 1.025 to almost 1.30!! So I do a couple water changes and It looks like I have the system back to where it was. I decide to take a sample into the LFS...curious if the distilled white vinegar had an affect on the Hydrometer.
Their test showed my SG down to 1.021. I bought a cheap Floater and it also read the same...then I bought a new plastic Hydrometer and it too read the same range.
Long story short...I think the Distilled White Vinegar KO'd my old hydrometer. Make sure never to let the solution sit overnite!!
just and FYI

Buy a refractometer. It costs al of $40 and is accurate all of the time. $6 hydrometers are rarely accurate. I used to own one.. They are garbage.

it wont even cost 40 nowadays. I found one online for 20 something shipped and I will never look back!

Yeah; and they are such a simple device, its strange that they don't work. As long as the pivot points are clean, what can go wrong?
