DIY canopy question -> How to seal?

Well I just built a canopy for my tank and I have to say that I am impressed by how it turned out. I do have one last thing to do. I have to seal the inside and I am not sure what to use. I thought of either white primer or polyurethane, but I wasn't sure if they are fish safe even after they have dried. What can I use that will keep the moisture out of the wood and not kill the fish? Are there any things I should stay away from when it come time to stain it?

I think you can use polyeurthane ok. What type of wood did you use?? I have an oak vanieer(sp???) canopy for a 90g with polyeurthane finish.
How are things in Clearwater? Do you have any good LFS in the area that you can recommend?
