DIY Canopy

Hey guys. I have a stock 29g tank that i want to put a canopy over. my lights are 2x18w. Will probably upgrade if i ever get hungry for LPS and SPS. How high up must the lights be placed? Is there a minimum? as of right now, the lights are sitting on the top of the tank, directly above the water (maybe 1-2 inches above water)

For being such low power lights that aren't even specialized reef capable lights, setting on top of the tank like you have it is good enough. The more space between your lights and the surface of the water, the more PAR is lost. I hope that you are able to keep mushrooms alive.

A simple canopy can be built out of wood and painted. Leave enough room for an upgrade. To increase reflection, you can paint the inside of the canopy white and add some house flashing.

After a basic structure is built and you figure out how you want it opened, you can add trim and paint the outside, or stain and finish. Remember, saltwater is very corrosive and you should protect any surfaces that are around your tank from degradation.

Honestly man, anything more then what you have is better.

After those bulbs die out upgrade em'

You'll be able to successfully keep more corals with more light and better husbandry skills.

The purposes of a canopy are to mainly hang DIY lights, and lights that don't look good without being covered. The purpose is also to eliminate light splashing out of the tank. In the old days canopies were painted on the inside to reflect as much light into the tank as possible. These days with the development of aquarium specific light fixtures, it's easy to just buy a fixture, and sometimes it even looks better.

IF you are worried about your fish jumping, what most people do is buy something called Egg Crate - it's a light diffuser for florescent light fixtures. You take a side cutter and cut it out to fit the top of your aquarium. I personally prefer to paint my egg crate black with rustoleum flat black paint.

Egg crate is cheap, and it also is useful for other applications like frag racks, building structures, filtration systems, HOB filter mods... you name it.
