I had a 2 Liter soda bottle, used sugar, yeast, water and baking soda (to stabilize pH).
Melt, poke, get a hole through the cap of the soda bottle. Insert a piece of solid plastic tubing through there. Then I attached fish tank airline tubing to the end of that. On the end of the tubing I had a fine mist diffuser/air stone. You can use one of the cheap bubble counter things. There are definitely more options on that end. It does need to be a diffuse/slow bubble in order to get benefit. There must be time for the gas to diffuse into the water.
there are lots of sites on this online. google DIY CO2 reactor or recipe and there are plenty of things.

Hello, I have DIY CO2 systems on both of my freshwater tanks. I have one 2 liter soda bottle on my 25 gallon heavily planted tank and a 500-600mL water bottle on the 2 gallon cherry shrimp tank. For my DIY CO2 systems I use sugar, yeast, and water. If you look through the 2 gallon tank dairy that renogaw posted, there are some pictures of how I made the DIY CO2 system.

i will look
but my question is can the tube jut be in the water like the plastic tubeing in the tank?
or shoudl i put a air stone thing on it?
i know how to make it b ut its just a thought of does it help and what to put on the end goign into the tank?
i have a check valve on the tube going from the bottle to the tank since it will be on the ground (the bottle)
i have a little cylinder shaped airstone..
and the one time i need a 2l bottle i cant find one..
i have a milkjug tht i got froom hood tht has never had milk in it just ro water. can i use that?
it has a

[hr]
on top not a pop on/off one.. or is the jug to flexible because the sides to bow to much?
thanks for your time!

ophiura, u said it needs time to diffuse in the water so should the end of the tube be near the bottom?
and for a heavily/moderate planted tank should i make 2 of them? and to balance it out put a bubble wand.?
thanks again
i always seem to over think everything lol

It will take hours if not days to build up enough pressure to work. Definitely not instantaneous. IMO, the CO2 just bubbled from the end of an airline is worthless. It needs longer contact time - either being diffused through an airstone or through a different sort of contraption eg something that will trap some of the CO2 bubbles so they have time to diffuse.

ohhhh okay. okay!
it seems to be on and off working better sometimes then others.. it started to work but a little. when i agittate the bottle it bubbles.. does it need to be agitated by something all the time or just more time for it to build pressure up?
will the plants use up the co2 faster then you could overdose it?
i havea bubble wand in there under rocks.. i assume tht produces o2?
and one last question.. how bad is tht mixture for the tank?
i think a little got in by accident.. not a lot just few drops worth.
thanks again
im trying to learn somethign new again lol planted tanks..
