DIY Fuge w/out Sump??? HELP!!

I want to upgrade my filtration on my 55 reef. Now I have a 330 Bio-Wheel and Skimmer. Neither are top of the line. So I decided to do a DIY Sump/Fuge. I went into my LFS and told him about my idea. I planned on doing a 20 long and dividing it in sections for the fuge, sump, and pump areas. He told me it is a good idea and that it would work, but he told me to only make a larger fuge, as that a sump would not be as beneficial. Has anyone heard of only fuge and no sump as filtration? If this is a bad idea, how could I build the DIY "Filter". Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Good thread on what you are looking into.
I haven't posted mine up yet, but I just made one too. Mine is a 20 long w/ a small sump and mostly fuge with a return on the end. Very similar to vito's in the thread I posted. It should work good. I used thin plexi from home depot and acrylic sealant (2 tubes) I purchased from petsmart. As far as your baffles go, have HD cut them... it's a pita to cut that stuff. lol... If you have any questions, let me know!

home depot sells those plexi glass in the window department.. i use da razor and a ruler to guide and razored ita few times then snapped it.. thats how you are suppose to cut those.. they snap inhalf after you cut it a few times.. real nice snaps too...try going slow when you slice.. a picture of mines.. first time i tried to drill holes.. kinda messed up on some.. but my overflow came out nice

Nice! So you are saying to just go with a 20 L and divide it into like 4 compartments (1 input, 2 sump, 3 fuge, 4 return pump)? does that sound good? Do you (or anyone else) have full fuge shots that might give me a better idea on how to do this? I'll try making a picture on Paint and I will post it later. Thanks!
