DIY hole size and pump relation question.......

ok i have a 125 tank and I will be drilling it. my question is 1 hole or 2?
2 small holes one on either end?
or one larger hole draining from one spot?
the picture i have in my head is to make a PVC pipe hang on the back of the tank with slits cut in it via skill saw. just deep enough to pull water from the surface of the tank, and not much deeper.
is one down spout on either end of the pipe over-kill?
or can I get away with 1 hole drilled at one end and let the water pull from one side of the skimming pipe?
also....
choosing a return pump, i was gonna get a 1800GPH pump, is that too much or too little? and can they be adjusted in speed?
or will water drain just as fast as its pumped up?

Some pumps can be adjusted for speed -- which you want so you don't pump in more than drains.. depending on your drain. But the less holes the better I would say. -- too early to read the rest very comprehensively lol
