DIY hood

I am building my hood for a 50 gallon reef tank. I have two metal halide 175 retro fits on the way but want to have the hood ready when they get here. I am wondering how tall to build my hood in order to have the lights far enough from the water. How much room do you think the halides will take up height wise from the water? I was thinking of making the hood 12-14" tall. That way about 1" would be used to cover the rim of the tank. I figure the lights will take up about 4 inches so then the lights would be 7-9" off the water?
Does this make sense or am I way off? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks again this site has really been a great help in getting good advise. The quick responses are great during the middle of a project as it limits the downtime.
