Does the diy lr actually become lr? If so, is there a way of knowing when the rock becomes live? Thanks.

Yes it becomes live.
Many people think being live means it has things going all over it. That can be done by gluing corels to it. The coraline algea will take a little time to get started, but it will.
IMO, being live means to have bactieria growing in it just like live rock, and it will become live. That to will take time.
I made about 50 lbs and stuck it in my refugium. It's almost a year old now and I'm sure it's live, and it's covered with coraline.(no, I didn't glue any corels to it
)
