I'd like to give a shot at putting together my own Metal Halide lighting for a 90 gallon tank I just purchased. I've got some good options as far as setup goes. I can build it into a wall (at least flush with the front and completely accessible from the back) in the finished basement so all you see is the tank itself. The down side of this is that it will be all the way at the end of the room which is fairly long and not where the sitting arrangement is at. I can set it up along a wall more in the middle of the room using the stand and canopy it came with. So I have a choice to make and part of making that choice is determining what I need for lighting.
I really like the looks of the metal halide, but not the cost. Does anyone have some simple to follow instructions on this. I've been told 175 watt metal halide would work well for a tank that I only plan on having fish and live rock. I assume I'd need 2 of these, but not sure. The tank is 48" long, 18" deep and 24" tall. The lights could go inside the canopy or suspended above the tank without the canopy.
