DIY PC Lighting Question for a HEX

Im trying to find and easy DIY lighting solution. Let me know what you think about this
I have a 35 HEX.
Widest distance across the top is only 20" wich is making it hard to find the light I need.
Could I get a glass or acrylic top for my hex and then just set this on top of the glass? (whithout hanging it.. actually setting it right on the glass)

I would still mount it off the acrylic tank as it will generate heat and in time may warp your tanks top. Maybe some modified motor mounts or similar heavy duty rubber that wont melt under the heat. Just to be safe i know pc's can still generate a good ammount of heat i had that with my fowlr tank.
