I have two 10g tanks under my display. One is the refug with macroalgae, sand and liverock. It gets it's water from a direct siphon coming from the display. I have a bulkhead about 4" from the top that drains into another 10g tank holding my return pump, bioballs and filters. The second tank is also fed bu my overflow box from the display (it gets it's water from two sources). Mine works great.

Do you have the 10 gallon tank yet? If not, my suggestion would be to buy as big a tank that would fit under your display tank and get rid of your sump. Then build a sump/refugium out of the new tank.

In that case, the best thing to do would be to drill both the sump and tank and put a bulkhead in each, then put a piece of pipe connecting them together. One other thing would be to elevate the sump about 4" or so, then drill it and install a bulkead and a pvc elbow draining water into the 10 gal tank and them pump into main tank.

If you set one up about 4" higher than the other all you need is a bulkhead in one about 4" from the top. When the water level reaches the bulkhead it will flow into the second tank. Just plumb the first tank to drain into the second one.

Here is a quick sketch of the way mine works.

Water comes to the one on the left from the display. It drains to the second one. The pump is in the second one and it goes back to the display. The first one has sand, LR and macroalgae.
