Diy Skimmer Build / Shape Question.

I was wondering if there is a reason or absolute need for skimmer reaction chambers to be ROUND? I am thinking about building one to see if I can do it successfully. Clear PVC at 8” or more is VERY expensive but I have the capability to bend flat Plexiglas and I have a plastic heat welder.
Could I not make a square reaction chamber with an 8” PVC cone on top to funnel the bubbles out of the chamber and into the collection cup? Would there be a downside to making it square instead of round?
If I make a square reaction chamber @ 8” x 8” 24” and use 2 800 gph pumps with venturi valves, the skimmer should be rated for about a 1200 gal system if my calculations are correct.
Would appreciate any info?

As far as I know, there is absolutely no reason for it to be round. It's probably just the easiest way for them to get built in mass production. My buddy at the lfs and I have been working on a way to build very efficient venturis for a skimmer, and haven't been real sucessful yet. Do you have any ideas for your venturi, or what is your micro bubble making plan?

I can buy venturi inlets for about $15 each. I am trying to figure out if I can MOD a needlewheel for the pumps I already have or will I have to buy new pumps. If I can then I can build this thing out of stuff I already have.
Once I get it going, I will post progress reports.

OK, I found out that I can replace my impellers with needle wheel impellers. so I will end up with venturi inlets and needle wheel impellers. This should be freakin awesome. I can keep you updated if you wish.
