DIY skimmers

How would you go about making your own skimmer? Would a home made be as effective a maybe a berlin or other skimmers?
Is it worth building one or should I spend the money and buy a new one?
One last question is it guarenteed to last?

While you might be able to make your own skimmer, I think you'd be better off buying one. They are pretty technical to build, especially if you try to make a venturi or downdraft type. The Berlin works great and you can get one with pump for under $200... I bet you'd have over $100 in making one, by the time you buy acrylic tubes and a pump.
