I have a stand that is 72x16 and a tank that is 18 wide. Can I add something like plywood to compensate for the overhang while it is still safe?

You can, it must be extremely sturdy. The top must be absolutely evenly disbursed for weight.
In all honestly, I would just make an entirely new stand. They're easy and don't cost that much.

lol oh well..... I actually sold the 90 gallon tank and stand I had. The 90 gallon stand wouldn't fit a sump "big enough" for me to be happy (over a 20Long) and I had just sanded, restained, and custom built a canopy for it. The other stand I had I custom built for the 125 I had which was 16" deep was just built out of 3/4" Bir_ch Lol. I wasn't wanting to do another so....I'm happy now lol. BTW, the 125 needs a new front glass, well doesn't need, but it's scratched up pretty well. Oh well it's like $125 for new glass, and it leaked when I bought it, so the silicone I had already removed. I made money on that deal as it was anyway, so it's kind of a freeby.
