DIY Sump/Fuge from 10gal aquarium?

I'm looking for a new method of filtration for my 29 gallon tank since I want to get rid of my Eclipse hood and get some decent lighting on my tank, and I was wondering if making a sump/fuge sort of filtering device with a regular 10gallon aquarium would be reasonable?

Or would a cheap (under $100) cannister filter be a better idea?

My vote would be for the sump. If you put dividers in it using acrylic and silicon you could have a small area setup for some live sand and plants to help improve your water quality (you would need a light for it then). I have used a canister and sump and will never use a canister again.:yes:
