i just got a 90dt and i'm going to build my own sump,or at least i think i going to . i've looked at a lot of diy links on line, but what i'm hoping is that maybe i can get some of you to post a pic of what yours looks like so i can get a better idea. i don't want a refugium ,i would like to set one up with bio balls, and hopfully have the tank large enough to handle the overflow. i'mthinking a 30 should do .thank you in advance ...walt

a 30 should be fine, but imho bigger is always better. if its just a sump you dont need a design cuz a sump is just a bare tank for your equipment

yeah you could definitely do it unlighted. I just have the macro algae in their it helps keep it so i just have to do a water change once every 2 months and my nitrate rarely go over 0. So in the middle i just have a built in refugium that i have a goby and a pistol shrimp in :-D they are sooooo cool. But basically i bought a 30 long and calked other pieces of plexi glass I will take you some pictures it is so easy to do... Plus i am opening a store soon and I will be saleing those filters there :0)

Yeah you could still keep sand and rock in the middle with no light... I would actually recommend to put the rock and sand in there.... In the first compartment I have the protein skimmer and in the last i have a phosban reactor. and about charcoal i have never used it. the cover also is not a bad idea it would help with evaporation the only problem you might have is depending on how much lights you have on top it might make your water heat up. bc the breathing sump helps keep the water cool. I have metal halides so my water would be runnign around 90 if i did not have a chiller and keep the sump open anymore questions feel free to ask love helping new hobbiest
