When determining the right amount of hardness in a tank you have to look at the stability of the ph. They go hand in hand. I have a reef and so I keep mine at 11. I believe for the fish only tanks...natural seawater has a hardness of 7 or 8. If you want corraline to grow on the rocks I would raise it to at least 9 and keep the salinity at 1.024/ 1.025 and the ph around 8.2 / 8.3 . Keeping the alkalinity stable will ultimately keep the ph stable. They go hand in hand. Hope this helps.
