do I blow or just suck?

I have been struggling to get my overflow going on my tank...I got this in a trade and the guy told me I should insert a tube into the U tube and blow in it to start the syphon, this has not been working...should I be sucking on this air tube or blowing into it? The sucking seems to work a litle better, but it hasn't started and my mouth is full of salt and god knows what else...thanks

You should suck so it pulls the trapped air out of the u tube.

I put 2 check valves in my tubes,then I attached a small air hose to the check valves,you need to really suck hard real quick....that way you do not get any saltwater in your mouth.....I made my own overflow box so mine might work a little different.
