Do I need a skimmer right away??

When I start my FOWLR this is what I'll have:
55 gal. (drilled)
90lbs. Aragonite 0.2-1.2mm sugar-size
25lbs. LS
75lbs. LR (cured)
40 gal. sump w/Mag-Drive 9.5 for return
Emperor 400 (not necessary I know, already have it though)
Powerhead 402, Powerhead 802
200 watt heater
When I first set this up will I need to get my in-sump skimmer right away? If not, how long can I wait till I need it?

I was told to wait 5 months before adding a skimmer to my reef tank.I did just that and everything has been a-ok.HTH.

a good time to add a skimmer is when ur cycle is done and when u start adding fish in it. or right away if ur cycling a tank with uncured live rock.. some ppl dont use a skimmer but i highly suggest the use of it...HTH

I know it is not the norm to not use a skimmer but I would like you to see how many of the great reef tanks do not use one. Again I encourage you to visit www.garf.org to see what one would be capable of by not using a skimmer. I like to think it would be considered a more natural process than using a skimmer. I also find it more satisfying, that I have been very successful in not having to use a skimmer. Also it is much cheaper to buy a little macro algea and setup a more natural system than to buy a very expensive skimmer (depending on tank size). Also who is to say that they have their skimmer skimming the correct amount of protien out of their system anyway, you might be taking out too much or not enough, you never know.

This tank will be cycling with cured rock and then be used as just a FOWLR for almost 6 months so I think I'll try to do without the skimmer for a few months, especially since the skimmer will cost almost $300

Besides if I don't overstock my Emperor 400 and LR should do pretty good without the skimmer.......right?

You really don't ever NEED a skimmer for a fish only. I ran my tank for a year without one.

I ran FO tanks for about 8 years and never used a skimmer until I started a reef tank.
