if you want one.
im gonna do a diy one for my 36 gallon. i am making mine for a few different reasons. it increases my water volume to let me have more fish, i can make a fuge to have a DSB and algae to lower nitrates, to hide my skimmer and heater, and it is real good filtration.

Just the increased water in the system makes them a nice OPTION. If you are seriously thinking about it you should consider a sump/refugium like 28 said but I disagree about increasing your holding capacity for fish to a point. You should only consider the display volume in assessing your bioload for fish anyway. While a sump increases the water volume it does nothing for swimming room.
What it does allow is hiding heaters, better options for a skimmer, Auto top off work really slick on a sump and if you dose doing so in the sump allows the additive to mix better with the tank water before coming in contact with your critters. Also good for temporary banishment of bad citizens in your display until you can find them a new home.

like reefraff said it MIGHT only help the bioload some. you cant get a fish that needs more swimming room than what you display tank is just cause you have a sump. and just because you might be able to have more fish..you should still consider if there is enough room in the tank for them...especially if they are aggressive and have their own territory.
i would go for a sump...you can make a DIY one for pretty cheap..or at least alot cheaper than a store-bought one.

Very kind of you to post this in the aquarium so it can be reviewed by the SWF experts.
A sump is not required.

Welcome to the boards! I can understand how the title "The Aquarium" would make you think that it would be a good spot for a post. That is actually a spot for non fish related topics. No worries though. I moved your post here so that you can get the help that you need.

Great, now I look like an idiot for what I said.

The guy knew where to go for a quality answer.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
ps...the thread got more replies in one day of the aquarium than it did after being moved....which is zero.
Ironic, isn't it?
