do i need a wood sealant

when making a custom canopy do i have to put some type of wood proctectant on the wood, or can i just leave the wood as is.

I would definitely seal it with some polyurethane to waterproof it.

You can also use Kilz sealant. Its white so it reflects light great. They also make it in a spraycan.
