do I really need a protein skimmer ?

My 55 gallon tank has finally started to cycle. I plan on a fish only tank with about 25-30 pounds live rock and some inverts, crabs, snails, maybe an anemone or two. My question concerns protein skimmers. I want to provide the best water quality I can for my future fish, and wondering if I really need a protein skimmer or not. I've been reading several other posts here, and see a lot of discussion. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Any recommendations on manufacturers / models would be great too.

I was online reading about the different types of protein skimmers available, and read some of the old posts on here as well. I may opt for the CPR bak-pak2 unit. It seems to be very popular, looks easy to operate and maintain, and for my tank I think it should perform well. Any thoughts on this choice ???
